1191   Otto the Auto   (DVD)

This DVD includes copies of each of the following five traffic safety videos for children. It presents basic pedestrian, passenger, and bicycle safety lessons in short, amusing, "Sesame Street" style learning sequences. Using your DVD player's menu function, you may show any one, or all five, of the videos.

Otto the Auto on Bicycle Safety (16 min.)

This segment shows children (1) to avoid darting out into traffic by observing "borders" along sidewalks, driveways, alleys, and streets, and how to choose safe riding areas, (2) how to choose a bicycle that fits properly and how to equip it for visibility and safety, (3) how to wear bicycle helmets properly, what fits and what doesn't, and why helmets are important, and (4) how to "drive" a bike by looking for openings in traffic, signaling for turns and stops, riding with traffic, and scanning for cars and pedestrians.

... on Pedestrian Safety (16 min.)

Four presentations teach children how to behave in various pedestrian situations:(1) to walk at the edge of the road facing traffic on streets without sidewalks, (2) where to look and how to cross a street when no WALK signal is present, (3) how to cross a street at a busy intersection with a WALK signal, and (4) why they need to be cautious around parked cars and why drivers don't always see children when they're pulling out.

... on Being Seen in Traffic (14 min.)

Three presentations teach children about pedestrian visibility and safety issues: (1) a Halloween motif teaches children how to dress to be seen at night or in bad weather by wearing bright colors and reflective materials, and carrying flashlights (2) shows children the view from the driver's seat to teach how difficult it can be for drivers to spot pedestrians, and (3) emphasizes the danger of playing near traffic and parked cars. Teaches children how to choose safe places to play away from traffic.

... on Wearing Safety Belts (8 min.)

Two presentations teach children why they need to wear safety belts and how to wear them: (1) uses an egg as a crash dummy to show how wearing safety belts reduces the risk of injury in a crash, and (2) demonstrates how to wear seat belts properly. Shows how seat belts fit over the hips and shoulder, and stresses the need to wear them in order for air bags to work effectively.

... on School Bus Safety (15 min.)

A presentation in four parts that (1) provides tips for getting to the bus stop safely, encourages children to walk, not run, organize their belongings in a book bag or backpack, and be on time (2) teaches children to stand back from the bus stop, avoid playing around, and board the bus in an orderly fashion (3) teaches kids the importance of remaining seated on the bus, keeping clear of the aisle, and allowing the driver to drive free of distractions, and (4) discusses the dangers of walking too close to a school bus, and shows kids areas around the bus where they cannot be seen by the driver.
